About Sickle Cell Hemoglobin SC Disease
Dr. Veronique Naessens explains the differences between Sickle Cell SS and Sickle Cell SC in her presentation slides from the 2014 Sickle Cell Conference in Toronto. Sickle Cell SC is not a milder form of Sickle Cell it just affects the body differently (ie. the symptoms present differently). Patients with SS and SC both get the same issues, but there are areas that SS and SC differ in severity. Sickle Cell SC can be deadly if underestimated and considered milder than SS. Doctors and patients have a tendency to underestimate this type of Sickle Cell due to the fact that there is less understanding about it and its affects on the body. It is better to say that Sickle Cell SS and SC are equally dangerous and should be watched very carefully.
